Picture a flying dust mop in black and tan with a dash of white thrown in and you have Dexter!  His long, silky, wavy hair resembles what would result if a Setter and a Dachshund got together.  It’s a great combination: he has the warm brown eyes at one end like a dachshund and a tail that whips back and forth like a flag at the other end like a Setter.  In between is a sweet, lovable little guy who never meets a stranger.  Dexter is about 18-20 pounds and likely very young, between 2 and 3 years of age.  He is in very good health and arrived housetrained. Dexter is a bit longer in the legs and body than the typical dachshund.  He will need room to roam and does not accept being crated or confined for extended periods.  Fencing needs to be secure because his curiosity will always tempt him to what is on the other side.  And don’t underestimate his ability to climb (compared to other dachshunds).  We once looked out our kitchen window to see him looking back at us!  He had managed to climb up a patio table and position himself smack dab in the middle of the window.  Hey!  It had been at least 5 minutes since we’d seen him!  New dogs typically have an adjustment period where it takes time to get acquainted.  Dexter is not that dog.  He is friendly with everyone right away.  He also adjusts to other dogs in the household quickly.  He was running and barking with the foster family’s pack the same day. In summary, Dexter is a lively dog, lots of fun and very loving.  He needs a secure yard and should not be left confined.  We suspect that he would do best with another canine companion so that the two could exhaust their youthful energy by running and playing. Dexter has not been exposed to children although nothing would lead us to suspect he would not be friendly with them as well.  Cats have only been seen thru the fence.
