One of our foster families came home from work to find a dachshund in their LOCKED back yard. The fence is 6 feet high, so that meant that someone had to literally heave this dog over the fence! Can you imagine? Thank goodness she wasn't hurt. We have named her Gretel, meaning pearl, because she is a gem of a dog. She is a 7-8 year old tweenie, and she is a very gentle soul, who shares her love with everyone. But it is obvious that she was just ignored.
She has terrible flea dermatitis and she has 80% hair loss with horrible crusting and flaking of her skin from yeast infections. We can't imagine how miserable she has been. She is getting soothing, medicated baths and is on antibiotics to help clear this up. She also is heartworm positive and will need to go through treatment. Once she is all fixed up, this pearly gem Gretel will snuggle her way into your heart.

I wasn’t in the best shape when I first found my way to my foster home but I am happier now. My skin is clearing up very nicely and I’m really having a great time with my foster brothers and sisters. I love my baths and I get to snuggle in a towel until I get dry! My foster mom gives me free reign of the house all day, whether she is home or not, and I never have an accident or cause any trouble. As you can see, I just love blankets and will snuggle and sleep in them for hours. I even get to sleep in the big bed at night now.
My foster mom says I make the best foot warmer ever! I am excited to get spayed soon so I can start heartworm treatment. I heard the doctor say that my case was very mild, so I’m sure I’ll get through that like a champ. After that, I’ll be ready to come to your house and warm your feet whenever you would like!
UPDATE
Things sure have been busy for me! My fur is all grown back and shines so brightly. I had surgery to fix my hernia and make my teeth sparkly clean. Just when I thought I was a girl who had it all, Christmas morning came! Santa left presents under the tree and there was one just for me! After opening my gift, my foster mom made me a special Christmas breakfast, and I settled in for a short rest on the couch.
I really appreciate the kindness and love I have been shown. My foster mom says I'm a "lovely lady," with the very best manners. I am content to snooze away the time on my favorite blanket, or on your lap while you watch the evening news. When you're ready to play, I will dance and let out a muffled sounding bark. I can be thoroughly trusted in the house when you are away, and will patiently wait for you to return. I have learned how to use the dog door and do my duty outside, every time, without fail!
As the New Year rolls in, I will be starting my heartworm treatment. I know that will not be much fun, but I'm glad that I will get healthy. Very soon, I will be ready to be adopted into a home that I can call my own. My foster mom says I can take my blanket and special toy with me when I am adopted. There, I will have a real Mom or Dad, or maybe both! Something tells me that 2010 will be my year. I can't wait to find a new beginning, and my happily ever after!

I'm still following the trail of bread crumbs, just hoping they lead to your door! I'm all healthy now and ready to find my way home. My foster mom says you can't find a better mannered lady than me!
I will tell you when I'm hungry, need a good cuddle, or want to go to bed. I let out these funny sounding barks whenever I need something. You can trust me in the house and never need to worry if I'll behave. All I want is a safe place to call home. In return, I will show you my appreciation every day! Won't you help me find my way through the forest and to your door?
UPDATE

I just had the most fun today! I went to the Triple Crown PetFest & Expo and got to spend an entire day meeting new people and cheering my friend (Bailey Rose) on to a 2nd Place victory in the Dachshund Dash! It was so much fun to hang around with all the other dogs and new friends to meet! Of course, as is usual, I was on my best behavior and showed my ladylike manners to everyone I met. I sure hope that someone there fell in love with me and will offer me my forever home! Maybe you were able to attend? If you weren't there, I'd still love to meet you soon! I'm very social and loving and would enjoy spending my time with someone just like YOU!
