When the call came to rescue this tiny girl from the shelter, we knew she was suffering from hair loss and needed a safe place to live. Nothing prepared us for the sight of how truly neglected she had been. Even the doctor who treats our dogs had to admit that she was one of the worst cases he had seen. Despite her condition, she immediately began wagging her tail, giving gentle kisses and snuggled eagerly for a loving hug.

If you look very closely at these pictures, you can see the beautiful puppy hidden deep inside. Beneath the hair loss and thin frame are the eyes of a championship prize fighter. Her eyes gleam with determination and her walk shows purpose and drive. Casey Jo is energetic, playful and quite simply a sweet little girl. In her short span of life, she has known only hardship and illness. Yet through it all, she maintained an unwavering ability to love, share affection and seek out the approval of the people caring for her. She lights up a room with her joyful greetings and crawls readily on a lap for some gentle affection.

Demodex is a common occurrence in new born pups. Many puppies acquire the mites and naturally fight off the invaders within a few weeks. The difference for Casey Jo is she was unable to fight of the mites. As if that were not enough, she also has Giardia. It is likely she was kept outside her whole life and not even given access to clean drinking water. No one felt it was necessary to give her the medical attention or basic care needed to ensure she was healthy.

Casey Jo is now warm and safe in a foster home and getting the love and care she so greatly deserves. With each passing day, she regains her health and is looking forward to a future once held far out of reach. This little gem of a pup will surely shine brighter than a diamond. Her amazing personality will light up the world of the family she can call her own!

UPDATE

If happy had a name it would be Casey Jo! I'm just so happy from my nose to the tip of my tail! Life is fun and I enjoy living every day as a new adventure and a chance to find new games to play and friends to make. I love playing with my foster brothers and sisters, and have even learned how to get along nicely with the funny looking dog my foster mom calls "Kitty."

My manners are good and I just need a routine schedule and gentle reminders to do my business outside. I've learned to enjoy sleeping quietly in my kennel, and love when I have lots of comfy towels or blankets to burrow in. I have even started helping around the house! My foster mom says I make a great weed puller in the garden! I also like to help with the housework and will keep all the toys picked up (and inside my kennel!) I enjoy playing with kids and love to fetch the ball when they throw it for me.

The great care I've received has allowed me to grow most of my hair back and recover from my illnesses. I will have a second test in a few weeks to ensure I am free from the past and ready to face my future! After that I can get "fixed" - though I'm not sure what is so broken and needs fixing! But, I'm told that it will make me even happier than I already am, so I'm all for it!

Life is fun and I'm ready to share that fun with a family of my own! If you've been wondering how I'm doing, I want you to know I'm doing just great! I'm the happiest little girl in the world and I'm waiting to meet you soon!
