Gabbie

Hello, here is a little story and pictures about Gabbie..

Our house has now officially been taken over by the wienies! Gabbie came into our house after her heartworm treatment a very exhausted and scared girl. Over the last 2 months she has come out of her shell; her beautiful strawberry blonde coat is shinny and she is the talk of the town. She is so loving and if you get to close you will get smothered in kisses. Gorgeous (as she prefers) runs around with her brother Rufus (our other rescue) all day and at night they have to be next to each other on the bed. Gabbie is so wonderful, she has made our family more loving with her wagging tail and kisses. She has become one of the girls with mommy, auntie Luz, and of course her grandmas, it's hard to explain just how feminine this little lady is with her little pink nose. Her little prance has earned the name milkshake, cause' she sure knows how so shake it! Our little girl is just the sweetest and most friendliest wienie I have ever seen. Oh and Gabbie sends out kisses to Donna, Chris, and Catherine!

Thank you CTDR,

Gabbie, Rufus, Marissa, and Rick

Luis

Luis and Mongo

Hi all! It's been just over a year now that we've had little Luis and I wanted to give you an update on how he's doing.

I know you all were concerned he'd never find a home (we could tell by the big sigh his foster mom gave on the first visit as she gathered him from behind the chair) and I'm so glad we decided to take Mongo to his foster home for a visit. Just like we thought, these two are "joined at the hip" (mostly in a doggie tornado across the floor) and do everything together.

Luis still has the one ear half up, one ear half down thing going and his front legs have turned so that now his feet are facing more backwards and officially doesn't know whether he's coming or going, but it doesn't seem to slow him up in the least.

Here are more pictures of "the boys". The first one with Luis with the collar is pretty much when we first got him (note his foot position) and the other was last night. You can really see how far his feet have rotated, but he can still jump up and kiss me on the face every time.

What he lacks in brainpower, he more than makes up for in lovin' and kisses (his very favorite thing in the whole world). He's gotten much better around men and after the initial bark to let them know who's boss, he actually has warmed up to most of our male friends (okay, there is this one guy, but I don't much like him either - lol).

Anyway, I just wanted to say a big thank you for bringing Little Luis into our lives. Mongo is much happier with a little brother and although the bed has gotten "smaller" we wouldn't trade him for the world.

Again, thank you for all your hard work.

Joaquin

Now THAT'S a Texas dog!

Hi Chris, This is Joaquin's mom. I just wanted to share with you a pic of him. He got a new cowboy hat. He looks so cute. He will not take it off. It has been over 3 years that we brought this angel home with us. Joaquin always seems to be smiling now. He knows he is loved and has found a forever home. We thank you for an awesome job you do for these little fellows. God Bless You!

Sambo Bambo reporting his Happy Tale

A great big HELLO to the great state of Texas! Texas native, SAMBO BAMBO, reporting from my new forever home in Enfield, CT! You remember CT, UCONN Huskies—you all know, national champs in basketball! I am here now, trying to get them to change to UCONN Dachshunds!!!!! Great idea, huh??

Wanted to share my story, because it is a wonderful one.

I was rescued from a puppy mill when I was a year old. I’m now 4.5 years old. They told my rescuer and my Texas Mommy, Barbara, that I didn’t produce the kind of pups they wanted, but that's a whole ‘nother story. Anyway, my Texas Mommy tried for several years to find me my forever home, but the two times I was “adopted”, I was returned after only one day because I was so very timid and shy. So, Mommy Barbara decided I would just live with her.

Then, Mommy Barbara got sick. She had 11 of us and some of my brothers and sisters could never be adopted out for one reason or another. Mommy Barbara and I talked about it and I was scared silly. Mommy Barbara had talked to me over the years about a forever home for me, but I never thought it would happen after my two experiences. However, Mommy Barbara said she would not let me go this time unless she was VERY sure she had found me my forever home, one that would love me and give me the chance she said I deserved. If that didn’t happen, I would just stay with her. Well—I knew how sick she was and I also know how much she loves me and how much I love her, so I said I would try. It also helped me because she told me if it didn’t work out, I could move back in with her!

Sambo Bambo at Hartoford Airport

After a time, Mommy Barbara found the lady who is now my forever Mommy—Mommy Joyce. Well, Mommy Barbara REALLY checked her out and finally told me I had my forever home! I made the trip by plane and that was VERY SCARY! Also, Mommy Barbara was so very upset at my leaving—she wouldn’t leave me until they came to help me board my flight! Her kisses and tears tore me up and I just wanted to tell her I wanted to stay, but I knew I had to be a big boy and stay strong for her sake. After all, I had to think about her and my brothers and sisters that could not be adopted out.

Sambo Bambo and his brother Alexander in the backyard

Well, I got to CT and there was Mommy Joyce! As soon as she put her fingers into my crate, I knew this time it was different! Although I am still very shy and timid, I did give Mommy Joyce a doggie kiss within two hours of arriving at my new forever home and I even let her lift me into the big bed that first night! I’ve been here five months now and things are going very well. I have a feline brother, Homer Lee, and he and I get along just fine. In fact, he is teaching me to use the computer! I also have a dachshund brother, Alexander Nicholas! He had been used to being the only dachshund so I took it easy with him, letting him see what a beautiful brother I would be and we now love each other dearly. Just recently, Alexander had to have surgery and I really missed him something awful, not to mention being worried about him. He is back now and doing very well, so I am one happy little dachshund! Mommy Joyce says we have plenty of love in our house and there is nothing love can’t conquer. Like Mommy Barbara said, Mommy Joyce is giving me the chance I needed and I am being a good little boy (except for her sandals which I ate a few months ago)! Mommy Joyce says I am getting to be the proud little dachshund man I was meant to be! I know Mommy Joyce loves me!

Sambo Bambo and Alexander --
A Happy Tale indeed!

I do miss my Mommy Barbara loads, but Mommy Joyce says that its okay. When I am feeling sad about it, Mommy Joyce holds me, pets me and tells me how much she loves me! It’s funny how she always knows when I am thinking about my Mommy Barbara. She says Mommy Barbara is a part of our family now too and she will be coming to visit us when she is well! I can’t wait for that!! So, here I am, with TWO Mommies who love me to pieces. I am the luckiest little dachshund on the planet!

Love to all,
SAMBO BAMBO, now formally known as Samuel Lewis Baker

Abby

Diana and Abby at Pet-A-Palooza 2004

Hi, my name is Diana ,and I adopted a dog from CTDR in February of 2004. Her name is Abby. She is a black and tan mini. I got her at 7 years old so she must be coming on about 8 years by now. I am not so sure when her birthday is, but I am going to make the day I got her the new official birthday. She deserves a party. I had never owned a dog. I had always wanted one, but never quite had the nerve to make the commitment. Now I wonder why I waited so long. I absolutely love my precious Abby. She is the queen at my house. She rules the roost!!!

When I first applied with CTDR for a rescue dog I was rather surprised to learn of the strict rules when adopting a dachshund. I couldn't believe the lengthy application, followed by a house visit. I thought all of this was rather much. I now understand why the rescue organization is so thorough. Without being so thorough, there could not have been such a perfect match as Abby and me. I asked for a lap dog , and I certainly got one. I also asked for a more mature dog because I didn't think I knew how to train a dog, since it was to be my first. She already came potty trained. What a delight.

I also listed the rest of the characteristics that I wanted in a dog according to my lifestyle, and what a great match CTDR did. Abby greets me every afternoon with such joy. It doesn't matter what kind of day I have had, when I see her I know the evening will be wonderful. I want to thank CTDR for caring for Abby until I was ready to take charge. I especially want to thank Karen, her foster mom. Karen still helps me out from time to time by answering my questions and also keeping Abby when I have to be out of town. And Abby does love her. (I'm just glad she doesn't mind coming back home with me after her visits with Karen!!!)

Thanks again, Diana Jimenez Austin,Texas

Emma Lee
(a.k.a. Muffin)

Muffin, now known as Emma Lee, has been with us for two magical weeks. She is, without a doubt, the cutest and best-behaved dachsie in the state of Texas. Each day since she arrived, she has revealed another charming trait. She plays well with her "cousin" when she visits, she is very slowly learning to walk on a leash, still doesn't like to play ball, but plays happily with us on the floor. Yesterday she met her veterinarian, Dr Wigginton, for the first time. We were delighted to find that she has lost almost a pound since she came to us at eleven and a half pounds and now weighs only ten pounds and six ounces.

About one pound to go! She is as sweet as she can be and loves us both more than we can imagine. When I'm in the study at the computer, she curls up in the big recliner and she matches the leather perfectly.

Thank you Chris, Hope, Terri, and everyone at CTDR who helped us make our family complete.

George
(a.k.a. Dickens)

We adopted our second doxie, Dickens (now named George) about a month ago. He is doing just great with his new home and sister Gracie. He loves to explore the yard and sun-bathe on his back. At night he snuggles in with his sister and wraps up in a blanket. I love the feeling that comes in knowing that I have helped to give these two a safe and loving home. They are the most wonderful additions to our family. Thank you Chris and CTDR!!

Fritz

Chris, Sorry that it has taken me so long to get these pictures to you. Fritz just doesnt like the camera and wont sit still!! Was in Midland last week and caught these. Dad has adopted a cute little black and tan 4 month old male. Seems that someone his housekeeper knew had him and no longer wanted him. So dad "rescued" him. He and Fritz play and play like they have been long time buddies. I just took 4 of our 7 out with me so that Hans could get used to us in moderation!!!

Fritz has been the BEST thing for my dad. He is constantly with him and minds him so well. Dad has commented several times that Fritz has been a life saver for him. My mom (even with her Alzheimer's) made a comment about it being a good thing for me to have gotten Fritz for dad!!! I can't tell you how much we appreciate you allowing me to adopt Fritz for dad!

Gracie Allen
(a.k.a. Patty)

About three weeks ago we adopted Patty, now named Gracie Allen. She has adjusted so well to our home and loves to explore the backyard with her big sister Kelsey Marie. She has continued her South Beach diet plan and is toning up from running around with our four children. She is a snuggle bunny who loves to give kisses and burrow in the blankets. Thank you so much to CTDR for giving us such a beautiful addition to our family.

Teddy

Dear CTDR,

I wanted to write a follow-up story on an older dachshund my husband, Gene, and I adopted about a year and a half ago. Teddy was his name - he didn't see and hear the best, but he found his way into our hearts more than we realized. We learned from Chris Holm that he had been found at a baseball field in Austin and then spent a good while in the excellent care of his foster mom, Rena Bonem. He never caused any trouble - he just moved right in with our other five doxies and two dalmations. He loved to eat and would let you know when he was ready - "woof - woof". He was so good in the house and because of Teddy, we learned about the doggie door. He never cared to be held much, but wanted to be where you were.

Thank you Gene and Roxanne for making Teddy's last years so special.
--CTDR

The one exception was that when he was ready for bed he wanted Gene to take him and he would lay with his head on Gene's arm. He started really showing his age in the last few months and had a few health problems and could no longer manage the doggie door, but that made him even closer to us. Then he liked for us to hold him. I was fortunate enough (and have a very tolerant, dog loving boss) to be able to take him to work with me. He would walk around my office in the mornings and then eat lunch with all us girls. When he needed to go out - I would take him out the back door. He never once had an accident or caused any trouble - not many people knew he was even there. Two Saturdays ago, very suddenly, he started having labored breathing - his heart was failing - we tried some heart medicine and he was better a few days until last Thursday evening. He passed away with our vet's help and me holding him last Friday morning. We are missing him terribly and wanted to tell his story to let folks know what a joy an older dog can be. True - there are things they can't do, but if you want a steady, calm friend who just wants love and care - please consider an older dog. We would take Teddy again without hesitation even knowing he wouldn't be with us that long. He was a very good boy. Thanks to CTDR for their work to help these homeless doxies.

Kaylie
(a.k.a. Stacy)

About a month ago we adopted our little furry friend from CTDR. Compared to the website picture, this looked like a whole different dog. Kaylie loves going on walks, and chasing squirrels in the backyard. She has yet to catch one though. She loves to sit in anyone's lap unless there is someone in the kitchen. We found when we adopted her that she had tapeworm and hook worm, so she would sleep too much.

Now she is just a healthy, sweet dog that wags her tail when her favorite people are with her. She could have someone pet her all day
long.

Thanks CTDR!

Rufus

Rufus was adopted in March and we decided to keep his name. He also goes by 'Rufino Beaker' and 'El Grand Salcecha.'

--Marissa

Dear CTDR and foster mom Catherine, After just 3 months Rufus has become quite the spoiled baby. He has grown from an 8 lbs mini into a very handsome 10 lbs doxie. He has gone from a timid and shy little man to an outgoing and loving weenie who likes to go on outings. He loves to leave his collection of toys all over the house and has taken over all the blankets and towels. He very much enjoys shopping for toys, sleeping, doing tricks, and squeaking his banana.

Rufus now has a half sister Motika and a cousin Raider, along with 2 sets of grandparents and lots of aunts and uncles who love him very much. He has made coming home each day worthwhile; the wagging tail and all the kisses will make anyone smile. He has become a great dance partner, a companion to watch TV with, and a homework paper weight. We love him so much and want to say thanks to Catherine for helping to bring our little sausage into our lives.

Rufus in his blanket

Lots of love,
Rick, Marissa, and Rufus

Tex
(a.k.a. Tux)

Hi:
My wife and I adopted Tex (AKA "Tux") from CTDR in February of 2003. Just thought I'd send some pictures of our little guy. He is the greatest! He loves chasing birds in the yard, going for car-rides, and going to the park for fun. He gets along very well with our old pug, Blossom.

Tex enjoying a few bones

He is now a Sooner, and growls whenever he sees the Longhorn logo! (just kidding). Thanks for our great "Tee-Bone". He has been a wonderful addition to our family!

Sincerely,

Hannah and
Bobby

Dear Chris and CTDR,

Just wanted to drop a quick line to let you know how happy we are with our new people! We have been with them for a couple months now, and they are taking to training well. They play with us in the yard, take us for walks in the neighborhood, stay out of the way when we are racing or wrestling, and let us take naps with them when we're all worn out. We definitely think we'll keep them. Best of all I got better (Hannah) and we both got to stay together thanks to the great people at CTDR! Including a couple photos for you.

Hannah and brother, Bobby

Love,

Hannah and Bobby

Baron
(Clyde)

Hello!

Baron (formerly named Clyde) is doing so well! Here are two pictures of him with his new sister, Berlin. (They were both so cute, I couldn't decide which one to send.) Baron is the larger one. They play together and sleep together. Both being lap dogs, they even stack up when they only have one lap!

Baron is about as sweet as a dog could be. He's eating well and getting lots of love. He looks heathier every day. He's put on a little weight so he's not so skinny and has had his stiches out from surgery. He took immediately to our home making himself comfortable.

Baron & new sister Berlin

I admit, he sleeps in the bed with us, but he's so cute and cuddly, we can't help it! It breaks my heart to think about what he's been though, but we are so happy that he's with us now. He loves to be outside and chase squirrels out of the backyard. We got so lucky that this little cutie found his way to us. We adore him!

Charlie

Dear Chris,

About a year and a half ago, we adopted a dog you sponsored named "Charlie". He came with a ball and we would like you to know he's been a joy to our hearts! Our other adopted dachshund, Lucy, loves him, too! He has actually helped her with her separation anxiety! I'm sending a picture of Charlie that we recently took in our back yard as he was basking in the sunlight. He still has a ball! Charlie loves to chase rabbits and give them a hard time, chase balls, chew on nylabones, and clean out Kongs! We just want to thank the CTDR for all the great work they do. It's so necessary! Think you might be able to put Charlie's picture on the "Happy Tails" page some time?

Sincerely,

Abby Villarreal

Sparky

It has been one year since we adopted Sparky from Central Texas Dachshund Rescue. Sparky was a nine-year old tweenie who had been taken to a kill shelter by his family who felt that there was not enough room in their apartment for such a gigantic (15 lb.) dog. Chris rescued him from there and we are very grateful to her for saving this precious boy.

Due to severe periodontal disease, he had to have all his incisors, and all of his pre-molars removed, leaving him with canine teeth and most of his molars. He also was diagnosed with ear margin necrosis and bronchitis. In the six months Chris had him, he was treated for his illness, altered, housebroken and crate trained. We adopted him last April and have enjoyed every minute with him. He has a doxie mix "brother" named Buster Brown, whom we rescued from a life on the streets. Although Sparky and Buster Brown had some issues in the beginning, they are gradually learning to accept each other. They are becoming closer as time goes by.

When Sparky arrived, he seemed to have absolutely no concept of play. When Buster Brown, who loves to play, would run by, Sparky thought he was being attacked and would respond with snarls. He has learned that play is fun and now plays with his daddy and his mama, and we do see signs of Sparky learning to play with Buster.

We are retired and spend a lot of time traveling in our 5th wheel trailer. Buster and Sparky go everywhere with us. Sparky had a bed in the back seat of our truck and goes to sleep almost as soon as the engine starts. Buster and Sparky have been to New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Colorado, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and several places in Texas. In a couple of months, they will be going to Kansas, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, and will help us to find Lake Woebegone, MN.

Sparky is a daddy's boy and Buster is a mama's boy.

Sparky and Buster

We are thankful for the opportunity to have our lives so enriched by caring for both boys, and we are thankful for organizations like CTDR and people like Chris!

Pippin

Yes, things are going VERY well with our little Pippin! I have been trying to get the time to write a note to you to let you know just that, as well as how please I am with CTDR and most especially with Pippin's foster Mom, Ragni. She did such a great job with Pippin that I am having a very easy time of it! He is adjusting so well that it's obvious just how much Ragni did for the little guy. If she hadn't, I would still be helping him with things he's already become accustomed to and now needs no help with, you know what I mean? She should really feel good about what she's doing, because she IS making a big difference, and people like me (and dogs like Pippin!) are truly thankful for her!

This little guy couldn't possibly be sweeter or cuter if he tried! He has fit into my "family" (me and my cat!) and my lifestyle perfectly. I am impressed with the professionalism of your organization and the compassion and dedication of your foster parents! Pippin's foster Mom has truly made a noticeable positive difference in his life, and I know he appreciates that as much as I do. He cried so hard when she dropped him off that it broke my heart to know I was taking him from her. Fortunately, he bonded to me immediately, and the ONLY issue we have to conquer is his separation anxiety. He is making great progress with it, though, as he let me go into the store for 20 minutes while he patiently waited in the car for me -- and believe me, that's real progress! He also lets me go up or downstairs without him sometimes now! (But I must admit that I love having such a sweet little shadow!)

His story on your website is what caught my eye (well, that and his adorable picture!). He was found wandering the streets with a rope around his neck that he chewed through to get away. He was so malnourished that every bone was showing and he even had grand mal seizures. I am so thankful that I did not have to witness these things, and doubly thankful that his foster Mom was strong enough to pull him through the tough times. All I have to do is spoil him rotten -- how lucky am I?!

He now gets to go to "Daddy Daycare" each day when I go to work instead of having to stay home alone, which is WONDERFUL! A retired neighbor of mine has a 13 yr. old mini Dachshund who is missing her older sister who was just put to sleep, so he offered to take Pippin each day so that both dogs could have some company. Who could ask for a better situation? I'm so lucky! We just started that last Friday, and Pippin was so excited when I returned to pick him up because I guess he thought I might have left him for good! Little does he know that I could NEVER desert a sweetheart like him! It breaks my heart to think of what his past might have been like, and I think I'm glad I don't really know. All I know is that I will be spoiling him with warm beds, tummy rubs, and LOVE for the rest of his life!

I am enjoying "parenthood" so much that I still may adopt a buddy for Pippin! There are so many benefits to adopting older dogs whose personalities are known. Your foster parents really give good insight on the adoptees, and these little guys are so happy to be loved that it both warms your heart and breaks it at the same time to think about what may have happened to them before they came to you.

A big THANK YOU to you and everyone in your organization for caring enough to help these babies get a second chance. Pippin is truly loved in his new home, so congratulate yourselves on another happy ending. (And maybe another adoption so that Pippin can have a brother or sister!)

Melinda Wharton, Pippin's Proud Mom!

Adrian (a.k.a.Sadie)

My name is Jennifer and I adopted a Dachshund from you about 4 months ago. Her name was "Sadie" on the website, but she now goes by "Adrian"....like my other rescued Dachshunds, she's really a fighter. I met her foster parents out in West Texas to pick her up and she was really frightened and pretty thin. Now, she is filled out, beautiful and loves her new "brothers" as if they were all from the same litter. Everyone calls her "my little shadow" because no matter where I go, she's there. The girls at my office adore her and she's gotten tons of photo opps in the past few months. My mom, who's also a Dachshund owner, took a picture of all the weenies for her Christmas cards this year. All the dogs were given reindeer ears or a Santa hat in the photo, but Adrian, being the only girl, got to wear the angel wings. She's just adorable. We celebrated Christmas in style this year...my roommate, who loves the dogs, brought home gourmet doggie smores and spare ribs for the "kids". We celebrated Adrian's birthday on January first with a miniature doggie birthday cake made entirely of dog bones and dog food icing. She was in heaven!!! ...Thank you so much for the opportunity to give such a sweet dog a wonderful new life.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Price
